Boys Will Be Boys!

Unique Combinations- be daring. Have fun!

Boys will be boys, no matter their age. I swear I see it every day at work and at home. My husband acts like my teenager at times and my teenager acts like my preschooler at times and the preschooler acts like the adult of the house most of the time except when he needs to have that occasional tantrum/meltdown…it’s like I’m watching Lion King with the Circle of Life right before my very eyes.

Funny enough I love working with men! They are more easily satisfied than women when it comes to putting together their look/image. Even if they are super picky, finding the right looks for them are simple (quality of) Fabrication, Fit and Feel (how comfortable it is on them). Once that’s achieved the rest is a piece of cake! Women clients? Well that’s a whole other article, lol!

Nonetheless, the point is that men don’t change much from who they were to who they are all grown up…they will ALWAYS be versions of their younger selves.

Even when they turn 50 and above men will still be young at heart and hopefully their desire to stay en vogue and desirable to who “floats their boat” (women, other men or both; no judgement here!) will still be intact. Men above 50 should be able to dress stylishly and stay in trend…with a little more sophistication of course. Everyone loves a little edge, a little more swag mixed with that seasoning (aka salt & pepper hair), lol!

Here are a few looks I think a swaggadocious and still age appropriate with and a little edge and sophisticated style. NOTE: to properly pull this off one would need to stay physically fit and not let your midsection grow too wide/large…that’s not sexy no matter what you wear.

Men’s Style Advice: White Hot Summer

White Featured Image

It’s safe to say there wasn’t much of a spring, as summer just ushered its way in like nobody’s business. One sure fire way to keep cool, classic and fashionable is by rocking white. Whether you’re headed to a party, to work or just out on the town, there is a white ensemble that fits every facet of your personal style.

1.      A White Sneaker

A clean white sneaker is very necessary this summer, largely because of its versatility. You can wear them with shorts, sweats, jeans, and suits. With a wide variety of selections, you’re sure to find a pair that easily fits your budget.

NFL Baller Tyrod Taylor sports a pair of low top common projects sneaker. Note how his trouser stops at an appropriate length just at the ankle.

 2.      White Jeans

Though they may be hard to keep clean, white jeans are definitely in this summer. The trick to these is finding the right fit for the occasion. Wear a skinny fit jean and dress it up with a loafer or sandal or a looser-fitting straight leg (please no boot cut fellas) and dress it down with your favorite sneaker.

  1. Fitted Tee

I’m not talking about Fruit of the Loom undershirts either. Invest in a few solid colored crew neck or V-neck that can take you from a movie date to running errands. Wearing a V-neck shows you put just a little bit extra effort into your look.  You can still be dapper and relaxed in your suit while wearing a T-shirt. Go straight from the office to happy hour to dinner.

Spring Trends for Men’s Suiting

Normally, I would turn this post into a women’s story about how masculine suiting works so nicely for womenswear and how to wear it for the ladies but I am listening to my male followers and tending to their needs…. Hi Fellas!

I get asked time and time again from guys about what’s the new trends in shoes (casual and dressy), clothing from everything in special occasion, work appropriate, casual Friday and cool accessories. I promise to add a lot more posts for men and answer all the questions I think you have questions about.

Here’s my first install…. enjoy and please leave comments to ask questions and request more topics if you find there is something more you want to know.

I love love love a well-tailored man in a suit. That is from his shoes to his topper (hat) if he wears one. But let’s talk suits right now. The slim fit is my favorite and it isn’t just for the lean and tall man. Actually, I find that it works on most men of varied heights. There shouldn’t be a lot of fabric hanging around and making your silhouette larger than it is. The proper tailoring of a suit is KEY to a slimmer appearance even if your midsection is a little obtuse.

I am not a fan of pleats on men’s pants but some body types need it…at least one I can stomach ONE pleat on each hip but that’s about it!

Staple colors in suiting you should have in your closet: NAVY, BLACK and GREY! Add a Khaki, Chambray suit as alternatives; which works well for business, dressy or casual Fridays. Notch or Peak lapels are most common and easiest to find.

Double Breasted jackets are only to be worn by those with no midsections (no potbelly, sorry!)

Tie Basics to have: a skinny black, knit ties in a variety of colors (adds texture) and some navy patterns (polka dots or stripes are easy) add the other colors like pink, browns, greys, in solids and patterns after you have those basics in your arsenal

Shirts: Always have at least 3 white dress shirts, one denim blue, navy stripe and a few polos (to wear when going a little casual but still want the sharp look of wearing a full suit.

Give your jeans a break and try some other denim pieces that will wow!

Three Piece Suit perfect for the workplace and gives off a rock & roll statement is one of my absolute favorite ensembles. Its sexy and rich yet serious enough to wear to work and fashionable enough to wear anywhere else.

If you know me, you know I LOVE JUMPERS; anything one piece is a friend of mine. It’s another diverse items that can be worn dressy or casual and works for almost all body types.Adding a bright accessory will add some personality to your look and make a statement more customized to your style aesthetic.

brightssA Fit Flare, oversized shirt dress and simple sheath are just a few chic upgrades that give new proportions/ shape to denim lovers.   The deeper the blue, the sweeter the style although rules are always breakable and I’m easily swayed by a destroyed destressed denim paired with a refined shoe and structured blazer

Not just for a cute cover for your picnic table anymore.  The pattern on pattern of gingham is a fun way to play with summer colors and magnetize onlookers.  There are plenty available in a full suit, break it up to pair with just about anything for a clean but modern pop of style or if just a blouse is enough try it that way but however you like it like Nike JUST DO IT!

HOT ITEMS FALL 2014

Fall Must Haves 2014 trench coats 5 cape features

Labor Day is over but for most of us the laboring now begins! That time to change over your wardrobe is quickly approaching and the dread of having to look in your arsenal is usually extremely daunting and overwhelming. I know the questions that loom over you constantly… What should I keep? What should I donate? What do I need new for the cold weather ahead and still look amazing? What can I afford?

Honestly, if you followed my Fall Must Haves from last September, you will need very little new pieces to be right on track and if you didn’t besides me shaking my finger saying ‘shame on you” I am certain if you take a thorough inventory of your entire closet (go to the back of your rack where you never pull from) you will find some items from this list that can be brought to the front of the rack again.

Fret not my pets… Again the trends are available in every price point you can imagine and many of the high end designers have done capsule collections with discount retailers like Target, Kohl’s and H&M just to name a few where you can get a version of their higher priced collections for pennies on the dollar to what it would cost in say Barneys or Neiman Marcus. So now I need you to take a deep breath, get a pen/paper or just print this article out and use it as your Holy Grail for Fall!

Grey is the new Black!

Not just for you but for the whole family.  For the first time in a long time, many of the trends this season are fundamentally the same for men women and children. Grey is a neutral for fall and can be paired with just about EVERYTHING!  You can wear it to balance patterns, wear it monochromatically (all the same color head to toe preferably in a mix of subtle hues differences or all the same hue if that’s better for you; but I prefer the mix of tones for dimension and character). It’s ok to give your traditional black suit a break this season. As a matter of fact, put them in the back of your closet and only pull them out for funerals this season. Let’s see how well grey works for you standing alone without it; you’ll be pleasantly surprised, I promise.

Rich Colors!

I always love how strong bold colors and patterns are balanced so beautifully with the simple addition of black and white; it is truly the great equalizer. This year will be no different; with the added help of the signature color grey when donning the HOT TREND and rich essences of BURGUNDY, REDS, CHOCOLATE and BLUES. These colors are reminiscent to of school uniforms; as I wore for many many years as a kid and loathed it. Now it’s refreshing to see these colors brought to life in fantastic fabrics (not polyester like those school uniforms) like chunky knits, rich suedes, cashmeres, fine wools, cool cottons and leather just to name a few.

The Bootie and Over The Knee Boot!

I couldn’t mention one without the other as they are both equally HOT Must Haves for Fall.
The Bootie is actually a year round essential but traditionally better accepted by the masses during cool/cold weather until recent. The over the knee boot is just as it states an “over” exaggeration of the standard knee hi boot but it has become a style essential for Fall. They both translate well from work to play and works beautifully with the pencil and flounce skirts (also a very popular staple for Fall).

Fit & Flare

Also known as the Skater Dress is a popular ultra-forgiving figure flattering dress for all body types. It cinches in the top waist (your smallest area; right above the belly just below the ribcage) and a-lines (/ \) from there. The skirt works well as a separate also paired with a fitted top of your choice (see Beckham in a great quality long sleeve tee with flare skirt). Whichever you go with, the one piece or worn as separates the idea and silhouette remains the same. The skirt will skim the hips for a flawless finish and deliver a shapely silhouette no matter whether you are a size 2 or 22 and the top will keep it tight and upright. The lengths come in ranges from mini to floor length so find the length that works best for your height. If you’re petite you are strongly advised to stay in the mini length. You need to show as much leg as possible and stay clear of the over the knee boot; its bootie or stilettos for you.  StyleTip#1: You can add a wide belt to compliment the bootie or over the knee boot you pair with it or it works well with a simple stiletto. It comes is a wide variety of patterns colors and textures just make sure the  silhouette is fitted at the top and wide and the bottom and you can customize the rest that feels good to you! StyleTip#2: If you have a Fit & Flare Dress that is in an evening dress fabrication or length (midi) you can still wear it to work! Pair it with a cropped denim or cropped varsity jacket for balance and wear a pointy flat (for added casual balance above and below) or a simple stiletto for the edgier fashionista; both very fashionable savvy and highly appropriate for daytime.

Fair Isle Prints
There’s nothing better than a soft knit sweater on a brisk Fall day. Now the sweaters you would just pull out to go skiing or for Christmas is now a go to all season long. The oh so comfy, home-y fair isle print (elegantly done by Pucci and Burberry this season) is coming out of the back of the closet, tossing the moth balls and wants center stage this fall. Its like look has us borrowing our fathers look. I personally would wear it more for a casual cute look paired with some fur lined boots and fitted cords but try them for yourself and see how you would rock them best for you. Regardless, how you wear them you wont be able to resist finding a crackling fire somewhere and roasting some marshmallow for old times sake.

Head-To-Toe Knits
I am so in love with drop crotch pants or rompers/jumpers because they are comfortable and they can be super stylish…its such a win win;  I Iove wearing them!  This season the next big thing  that is dually comfortable and chic is the head to toe knit.  Its like your favorite ice cream topped with candied bacon on top…something good made GREAT!  Knits aren’t just for sweaters anymore!  Marc Jacobs and Stella McCartney showed us on the runways their version and Zara and H&M will be doing it too. Comfort, Stylish and Warm together in one complete look from head to toe for fall. Thank you guys; you’re the best!

Colored Leather Skirts
We saw colored leather in pastel this spring. I wore one from H&M for my rooftop birthday soiree atop the Manhattan skyline this past June. Leather for fall isn’t exactly a new trend, but for fall its being shown in almost every color of the rainbow.  (buttery orange,  electric royal blue, ravishing reds and so on proving that leather is so much more exciting than black and beige.

Sparkle
What girl doesn’t love a little sparkle in her life. We absolutely adore a great sparkle on our fingers and I’m not talking about our nails! Besides a great diamond the other perfect accents in your wardrobe. This season, from jackets, to boots and everything in between you will find shine.  I’ll play along but the shine from a quality diamond on my digits still reign supreme with me.

Fun Fur
With Fall/Winter there are certain trends you expect to see year after year with just fresh twists to keep it modern. Leathers and furs (faux and real) is a staple. This year they reached far into the 80’s for some designers and pulled out the old school shearling jacket that I remember as pairing perfect with EVERYTHING from Clark Wallabee Shoes to satiny silk wrap dresses my mom would wear for special occasions and put on her shearling coat like it was chinchilla. I was young and didn’t have one but i remember it being warm as hell when I wrapped myself in it wishing I was lucky enough to own one. Well that style has returned all over the 2014 runways and now the streets, but in fun colors and prints. What was once an old trend is new again and if you happen to still have your mom’s, dad’s or grandma’s old shearling in the attic…pull her out, take to a reputable furrier or your local major retailer like a Bloomingdales or Macy’s Fur Vault and have them work on it and give it life and luster again. That furry friend is sure to be a hit with the fashionable set whether you dye the fur a funky outrageous color or not.

The Trench

This classic outerwear never gets the chance to hide in the attic because it really can be used year round. Even in the summer on rainy days a trench can be worn and be perfectly envogue. This season is no different. The variety of trench coats availabel this season is as long as it is wide in lengths, fabrics, weights, colors and styles. Pick one any one! There are losers as long as you own one. And what’s nice is the is one for every member of the family. It comes in sizes for toddlers and kids too!

The Extreme Turtleneck

I love anything that gives me warmth during these cold months. The extra high extra wide turtleneck collars are a MUST for those like myself.  Be aware that some of the fabrications like some wools, angora or acrylic blends might not always be smooth against your skin. try wearing a thin moisture wicking turtleneck underneath to save you from the itch-ezzz.

Hey Fellas, Are You Your Best Professionally Chic You?

New Professional Man3 New Professional Man1 New Professional Man7

It’s a new year and with that comes all kinds of changes to become your better you…at least it should be! I want to challenge you to commit yourself with new expectations of your aesthetic at work and play; but let’s start with work. Do you ever feel worried that your not taken seriously or maybe underestimated at work? Do you still look like you did in school/too young? Are you in looking like the position you want to be or like the one you’re in right now? At your interview it was paramount for you to give a commanding first impression however once you have that job it’s just as important to keep that look up as expertly executed as possible. Every last detail everyday should turns heads, get you compliments, and ultimately send a powerful message to the upper offices that you are meant to be in their ranks.

Hey Guys-

It’s a well-known fact that menswear is a much less complicated choice of options than it is for women; especially in suiting. Today the modern guy uses his accessories to liven up that cookie cutter dreary office suit with color and texture and variety.

NECKWEAR— A tie can pack just the right punch to an otherwise ordinary look with the right bright color or pattern. It’ll differentiate you from the “regular” men who pair dark ties with dark shirts. If a bold tie isn’t your cup of tea, try making that statement with your shirt instead.

COLLAR – The spread collar shirt is the standard now and will be for some time. Ginghams and plaids should be in every man’s repertoire; colors like brick red will set you apart.

‘KERCHIEF – We all know the classic white pocket square from the “RatPack” days to now and it still works for any suit however the new barometer on style and detail have professionals stockpiling an arsenal of patterned options in handkerchiefs. Don’t get intimated by the patterns and not knowing how much is too much pattern at one time. A good general rule is to wear one that plays off the colors in your shirt or tie.

Shoes- I am a big fan of the wingtip and brogue styles for men’s footwear. Color and texture in footwear is another vehicle to bring variety into an otherwise regular look. Always have your classic colors (black, cognac, chocoalte and navy) but adding options like cobolt or denim blue, burgundy, olive, etc… can make you look like a superstar when worn with a balanced hand.

Ready to get ready for fall…?

Midi

Midi

We all know it although we don’t want to say it so I will…Summer is almost over! I know it makes me sad too but although I’m no fan of being cold, I am fond of chunky sweaters and tall boots and fur (faux or real you decide!).  The best pieces of the season start to trickle into the stores this month and the style savvy run to snatch up the limited editions now while the rest of us are still sunbathing. No fret though; I always believe the savvy-ish shopper is the best informed shopper so with that in mind I wanted to man you with the info on what the HOT items are to keep your eyes out for and when you see it, try it on, if it works with your style, shape and color story for the season snatch it!

The Midi-
We know fashion is cyclical. This year’s new skirt length is a trend from the 1940’s finding its resurgence into our lives and the fashion runways in 2013/2014. Its ladylike silhouette is a little longer than the pencil skirt; hitting either just below the knee anywhere to as low as to the mid-calf. The MIDI’s appeal is across generations. It’s the perfect cover-up that is elegant in length and works day to night.

The Big Cat/Animal Effect-
I always endear a good graphic pattern but this year it seems like the bigger the better is the case! Many designers have animal prints from scarves to outerwear in giraffe prints, leopard, tiger, you name it! I have found that one good piece that stands out can make an outfit soar in this case it can make it roar! When wearing it one should tame the rest of the look with solids or simple cut easy pieces like that LBD or turtleneck and skirt or pant all one tone and easy to let the graphic item take stage…as it should.

Ice Ice Baby-
Vanilla Ice may have made this a famous phrase but this season Ice Blue and Black have teamed up to make this phrase a cold-blooded winner for winter! In addition to white (icy snow white; not winter white) ice blue is a soft yet electric color for this Fall/Winter season. Paired with the dark hues of black or navy are key color trends that give deep and cool touches to your style. Invest in a few pieces this fall in textures that are thick and nubby or perhaps suede and smooth like silk…looking cool as ice in the cold never looked so good!

Fur Accents-
Whether you are a faux fur wearer or one that wears the real thing, there are equally fabulous options out there for both preferences. The point regardless of the argument on which you wear, is that ALL should partake in a fur accent this season. It was a huge part of runway accessories and a part of many ready to wear and outerwear ensembles. It’s the perfect way to “rejush” an old coat and make a simple outfit pop as a fresh new look- with just that one fur scarf! Just like good fences make for good neighbors…a great scarf makes for great refresher to any outfit. Here is a tip for you, if you have an old fur coat/sweater or blanket take it to your local alterations shop/dry cleaner and have them make scarves out of them. Take one for yourself and gift the rest for the holidays…you’ll look like a superstar sharing your gift of style!

Macys Working Women Fashion Event 2013 (5)This is one of the many fashion shows I style and commentate for my client Macy’s. This one was at its historical flagship store in New York City, Herald Square.  The show was focused on “How To Be Stylish in the Workplace”.  My guest co-host for the show was the remarkable Helene Lerner, author of In Your Power, which is about women finding their voice in the workplace. She is also an independent public television host, Emmy Award-winning executive producer and Fortune 500 workplace consultant.  She covers a wide array of women’s issues—from breaking barriers and work-life balance, to health and wellness, to relationships and building self-esteem which we discussed as key points to climbing the ladder of success in addition to just LOOKING the part.

I styled Helene for the event that day and we got along so well she has asked me to
do a monthly fashion post on her womenworking.com blog and newsletter. I have been her fashion writer for several months now and the response has been fantastic! I discuss how to look your best, how to keep your chic without losing your respect in the office and tips on trends and what’s coming up next in hot collections to look out for all workplace approved. Helene and I was definitely an odd couple but awesome knows awesome and so the partnership began. She is an
awesome woman and with a huge following and I am happy to be a part of a movement promoting women being  their best and looking their best while doing it!  We all need support emotionally, mentally and physically to be that intelligent, strong and focused individual in a male dominated world.  Check it out my posts and all the other wonderful experts on the blog at www.womenworking.com.
