Women’s Look 2

This is the next designer following in the footsteps of Karl Lagerfeld, Stella McCartney, Versace, Marni and Maison Martin Margiela, French designer Isabel Marant, a French Designer who was made infamous by her wedge sneakers that became one of the hottest sneaker trends of this era (I have a few pairs; I just loved them!). Marant is next in line to grace us her loyal customers and H&M’s customers with her signature Parisian chic designs.

“The Isabel Marant pour H&M collection is an eclectic mix of boho elegance and rock ‘n’ roll insouciance. The spirit is quintessentially Marant: masculine tailoring is featured together with skinny pants, sweatshirts, loose blouses, airy dresses and textured knits” says H&M about the collaboration due to hit stores November 14, 2013.  Not many have the full collection of the H&M/Marant collection, but I DO! View the full lookbook, which includes pieces for men (a first for Marant) as well as teens and make your wish list now because when those doors open on November 14th, I predict there won’t be much left on November 15th  to buy.  This limited edition collection launches in select H&M stores across Canada and the US.

Unfortunately pricing for the collection will be slightly higher than regular H&M threads and accessories; tops start at $50 and outerwear range from $200 to $500. Truth be told… us Isabel Marant loyalists are THRILLED to get an Isabel Marant piece at “close” to an H&M price! We will suffer through the fact that its a little higher than other H&M items, really its ok!

I find her collection a great mix of what that contemporary woman would need. The Isabel Marant pour H&M has everything from basics like easy tees and tanks, teenager swag accessories, outerwear, shoes, cool sneakers and of course, the classic LBD, this collection is saturated with versatility for the whole family. Rather than designing a different style for ‘Women’, ‘Men’, and ‘Kids’, Isabel Marant stuck to the same look/story in knits and tie-dye for the entire collection comprising of sequins, knits, silk, and quality fabric.  Although the collection boasts wearable statement-making streetwear, the outerwear and knitted coats in this collection are nothing short of exquisite.

Another detail of this collection worth mentioning and that sets her apart from collections prior is that Ms. Marant used iconic models to showcase her premiere collection with H&M by the likes of supermodels, Alek Wek, Lou Doillon, Milla Jovovich and Constance Jablonski…Way to make your mark Isabel. Now let’s get shopping!

Ready to get ready for fall…?

We all know it although we don’t want to say it so I will…Summer is almost over! I know it makes me sad too but although I’m no fan of being cold, I am fond of chunky sweaters and tall boots and fur (faux or real you decide!).  The best pieces of the season start to trickle into the stores this month and the style savvy run to snatch up the limited editions now while the rest of us are still sunbathing. No fret though; I always believe the savvy-ish shopper is the best informed shopper so with that in mind I wanted to man you with the info on what the HOT items are to keep your eyes out for and when you see it, try it on, if it works with your style, shape and color story for the season snatch it!

The Midi-
We know fashion is cyclical. This year’s new skirt length is a trend from the 1940’s finding its resurgence into our lives and the fashion runways in 2013/2014. Its ladylike silhouette is a little longer than the pencil skirt; hitting either just below the knee anywhere to as low as to the mid-calf. The MIDI’s appeal is across generations. It’s the perfect cover-up that is elegant in length and works day to night.

The Big Cat/Animal Effect-
I always endear a good graphic pattern but this year it seems like the bigger the better is the case! Many designers have animal prints from scarves to outerwear in giraffe prints, leopard, tiger, you name it! I have found that one good piece that stands out can make an outfit soar in this case it can make it roar! When wearing it one should tame the rest of the look with solids or simple cut easy pieces like that LBD or turtleneck and skirt or pant all one tone and easy to let the graphic item take stage…as it should.

Ice Ice Baby-
Vanilla Ice may have made this a famous phrase but this season Ice Blue and Black have teamed up to make this phrase a cold-blooded winner for winter! In addition to white (icy snow white; not winter white) ice blue is a soft yet electric color for this Fall/Winter season. Paired with the dark hues of black or navy are key color trends that give deep and cool touches to your style. Invest in a few pieces this fall in textures that are thick and nubby or perhaps suede and smooth like silk…looking cool as ice in the cold never looked so good!

Fur Accents-
Whether you are a faux fur wearer or one that wears the real thing, there are equally fabulous options out there for both preferences. The point regardless of the argument on which you wear, is that ALL should partake in a fur accent this season. It was a huge part of runway accessories and a part of many ready to wear and outerwear ensembles. It’s the perfect way to “rejush” an old coat and make a simple outfit pop as a fresh new look- with just that one fur scarf! Just like good fences make for good neighbors…a great scarf makes for great refresher to any outfit. Here is a tip for you, if you have an old fur coat/sweater or blanket take it to your local alterations shop/dry cleaner and have them make scarves out of them. Take one for yourself and gift the rest for the holidays…you’ll look like a superstar sharing your gift of style!

I am most happy to report that Fall 2013 is stocked with trends worth trying out. Aside from the hip high slit skirts, extreme embellishments, radical florals and animal prints gone wild… most of this seasons trends can be workplace friendly in addition to social or evening attire.

Some trends have made it to the next season with an ever-strong presence still on the runways and soon again on the streets. PEPLUMS, FURS/FUR ACCENTS and LEATHER are going to stay in high demand at least for now through fall. They were shown in almost every runway show and are certain to make a mark on all our style for a little bit longer.

Outerwear has taken a more voluminous shape for fall where “the bigger, the better” really applies. Rounder shoulders and overall loose silhouettes are leading the style mark with big designers like Hermes, Thierry Mugler, Proenza Schouler and Alexander Wang who were one of several fashion shows that took it right the runways strong.

Drop those hemlines ladies!  Skirt lengths below your knee to about middle of your calf is called the MIDI LENGTH skirt, get familiar with it now because it’s a super-hot trend this season. I don’t expect this to be a long lasting trend however the great option you can have with the midi-skirts is that they can me altered to accommodate most future lengths needed later down the calendar. Note: this skirt length isn’t complimentary for all so if you are vertically challenged stick to the pencil skirt; it will give you a similar silhouette without shortening your overall appearance.

Velvet Dresses were a huge presence on the runways by the likes of Emporio Armani, Diane Von Furstenberg and Phillip Lim among countless others; from crushed velvet to low pile velvet almost mistaken for suede and in a myriad of deep jewel tones were showcased.

Black & White and Plaids are still making waves in fashion and I believe they ALWAYS and FOREVER will be a staple in fashion past present & future!  Color on color or monochromatic ensembles mixed with varied textures like furs and tweeds or cashmere and silks all the same hue is a savvy way to be subtly stylish yet still strong in trend. The top color this season is emerald green according to Pantone and the fashion world must have gotten the memo! Emerald and Army green were plentiful lending great variety and depth to many of the military inspired pieces being previewed.

One accessory that stood out this season was head wear. The lineup of millinery options was endless and is definitely going to be a big trend this fall. From cutesy skullys with pom-poms to fedoras in a plethora of fabrics, colors and patterns; the options available will be yours for the choosing! Have fun with it.

The key to wearing trends to the office for any season is the balance between finesse & restraint (if you are unsure about whether your look is appropriate for work…know less is more!)
